In the wake of the Corona outbreak, all educational institutions have have been closed by Federal and respective provincial governments resulting in an enormous potential deficit in the learning of our students. In this situation, the Dean of Faculty of Health Sciences, Shifa College of Medicine, Islamabad, encouraged the faculty to continue educational activities through the Learning Management System (LMS). With effective use of LMS, the students can continue their course work while keeping themselves safe at their homes.
The Department of Behavioural Sciences, in collaboration with the Department of Health Professional Education, planned a four-day training session, facilitated by Dr. Waqas Rabbani, with the faculty of basic medical and dental Sciences. The first part of this session was a two days extensive workshop, from March 17–18, 2020.
This workshop aimed to train the faculty on LMS; enrolling the students, making announcements, sharing timetables and study materials, developing and grading the assignments; and conducting online lectures through webinars. The faculty learnt the tools to create online assessments and take live attendance during the online seminar sessions.
This two-day workshop, followed by two-day hands-on dry run session, developed the capacity of the faculty in the effective use of LMS. During these sessions, participants developed mock classes, assignments and online lectures within small groups. A mutual peer learning environment was established, which helped faculty polish their skills and troubleshoot challenges. They also ran an introductory online seminar with their respective classes in which they not only guided students regarding study schedules but also took their feedback. The students took this change very positively and showed the same enthusiasm as exhibited by the faculty.
