April 3, 2025
On the morning of February 19, 2025, a group of 25 third-year MBBS students visited the Rehabilitation Centre for Children with Developmental Disorders as part of their Community Medicine rotation. Before the visit, the students received a comprehensive briefing on the center’s activities and the approach required to engage with children with developmental disorders. They were encouraged to demonstrate empathy, patience and understanding while interacting with the children. The visit commenced promptly at 8:30 AM upon the students’ arrival at the center. Each medical student was paired with a child, allowing for personalized, one-on-one interaction. Under the guidance of facilitators from Community Medicine Department, the students engaged in structured activities designed to foster communication, motor skills and social interaction. These activities, which were outlined in a pre-prepared checklist, included face painting, playing with dough, ring toss, passing the ball and coloring. The students found the experience deeply enriching and eye-opening, as it provided them with valuable insights into the challenges faced by children with developmental disorders. The visit not only enhanced their understanding of rehabilitative care but also reinforced the importance of compassion in medical practice. The children, in turn, responded with enthusiasm, enjoying the engaging and playful environment created during the session. Overall, the visit served as a meaningful learning opportunity, highlighting the role of community-based interventions in improving the quality of life for children with special needs.
