Seminar on Mobility Training and Rehabilitation of People with Visual Disabilities

On September 12, 2024, the Department of Community Medicine organized a seminar at the National Mobility and Independence Training Center (NMITC) for the Year 2 MBBS students in the Module of Special Senses. The seminar provided a valuable insight into the center’s commendable efforts in empowering individuals with visual impairment. The event commenced with an informative presentation outlining the institute’s various programs and activities designed to support visually impaired individuals. Key areas of focus included training in braille literacy and essential mobility skills like safely crossing streets and navigating stairs. During an interactive session, the medical students had the opportunity to experience some of the challenges faced by visually impaired individuals. Blindfolded, they were trained to use the White Cane, learning techniques for navigating their surroundings with limited vision. Overall, the seminar was a profound learning experience, fostering empathy and a deeper understanding of the rehabilitation process. It also emphasized the critical role healthcare professionals can play in enhancing the quality of life for people with disabilities, particularly through early intervention and support services.
