An awareness seminar regarding mobility techniques for persons with visual impairment was held on August 15, 2023, at National Mobility and Independence Training Center H-8/4, Islamabad.
The Department of Community Medicine organized the visit in the module of Special Senses for the Class of 2026. The aim was to create awareness among undergraduate medical students regarding the hands-on utilization of the white cane and various mobility techniques designed for individuals with visual impairment.
The officer in charge, Mr Taimoor Imran, initiated the event by delivering a brief on the challenges visually impaired individuals face. Following this, a demonstration illustrating the use of the white cane for the mobility of visually impaired individuals was conducted by Senior Mobility Instructors Mr Jabbar Khan and Ms Naheed Kausar. They presented techniques for both indoor and outdoor mobility. It was an interactive session where students actively participated in the hands-on demonstration. Concluding the session, Dr Sajida Naseem, Acting Head of the Department of Community Medicine at SCM, summarized the event and extended gratitude to the National Mobility and Independence Training Center administration.
The message to the medical students emphasized that even a tiny endeavour from healthcare professionals can significantly enhance mobility and overall quality of life for individuals with visual impairments.
