A serial workshop was hosted by the Department of Health Professions Education in the Basement Conference Room at Shifa College of Medicine on March 27th – 28th, 2024. The sessions titled “How to Write Learning Objectives and Outcomes” were specifically designed for basic sciences faculty as a refresher course and part of the ongoing faculty development program.
The workshop was expertly facilitated by Dr. Riffat Shafi, Dr. Muneeza Aamir, Dr. Shazia Irum, Dr. Hareem Fatima, Dr. Nilofar Nasir. Faculty members from the basic sciences departments were in full attendance, demonstrating a keen interest in enhancing their skills for curriculum development.
The facilitators led an engaging and informative session that began with an introductory overview by Dr. Riffat Shafi, followed by a detailed presentation and active discussion by Dr. Muneeza. The importance of well-crafted learning objectives and outcomes in medical education was discussed. Emphasis was laid on the critical role these elements play in aligning teaching and assessment strategies with educational goals, thereby enhancing student learning experiences and outcomes.
Participants were guided through interactive exercises designed to practice the formulation of effective learning objectives and outcomes. The importance of their alignment with objectives, goals and ultimate mission and vision of the institute was highlighted.
The session was concluded with a feedback session and needs assessment for future workshops.
