Department of Forensic Medicine

Forensic medicine is the branch of medical sciences that deals with the application of medical knowledge for the purpose of law and justice. The Department of Forensic Medicine at the Shifa College of Medicine teaches & trains undergraduate students to attain knowledge and skill in the field of forensic Medicine and toxicology. About one third of the 3rd floor of the college building is dedicated to Forensic Medicine department, including a state-of-the-art Forensic Museum having a gallery of medicolegal images and various poisons specimens, different weapons of assault and autopsy dissection equipment. The department is led by Assistant Professor, Dr Sadia Syed (MBBS, MPhil, CHPE, CFMH), who has been a passionate facilitator and researcher. She has been a certified forensic mental health specialist and certified health professional educationalist. Her areas of expertise encompass Forensic anthropometry, Forensic anthropology, and Personal identification. The department is further facilitated by four instructors: Dr. Hira Sattar, Dr. Maryam Safdar, Dr. Mohsin, and Dr. Usman, all of whom fulfill their roles with enthusiasm and dedication. The department employs a variety of teaching methods in its forensic medicine curriculum, including interactive sessions in large and small groups, clinical rotations, practical demonstrations and skill sessions in classes, as well as field trips to observe Forensic autopsies and Medicolegal examinations at District Headquarter Hospital in Rawalpindi and PIMS Hospital in Islamabad.
