In an effort to raise awareness regarding corruption and its detrimental effects on society, the Department of Community Medicine alongside the students of third-year MBBS decided to organize an event involving skits and poetry. Students were divided into 04 groups and given the freedom to express their knowledge and share their insight.
The event commenced with the recitation of a few verses of the Holy Quran by Rafae Malik. Dr. Sajida Naseem took to the stage to brief the students on the importance of such events during the academic year and incorporate them in such a manner that proves not only to be insightful but also entertaining.
Students of group A, through their skit, were able to enlighten everyone about the degradation of today’s youth due to the hands of corruption. Bright, young minds being fragile and unaware of the disastrous effects such things can have on them, are often attracted to certain pleasures and ease thus impacting their entire career. A multitude of societal, social and academic pressures can lead an individual to the verge of accepting such bribes and presents. Such issues should not be taken lightly.
Group B took the route of emphasizing the psychosocial impact of corruption. The premise of their skit mainly involved how it not only impacts the person but the social circle the individual is in but overall, the general society the person is a member of. Had they not gone on that path, they could have progressed to become pivotal members of society and help shape the community for the better. It is never too late to change and seek help.
The students of group C decided to take a different approach and instead opted to take the stage one by one and recall scenarios, based on true events about how someone they knew had gone through the horrific ordeal of accepting corruption once and dwelling down that spiral from which they could recover. They further elaborated that how people around them living normal day-to-day succumbed to seeking such aids and suffered losses beyond repair, in most instances.
The concept of the “Butterfly effect” was highlighted by the final group D as they had prepared a skit involving a family of 4. They elaborated on how there are always certain predisposing factors in our normal routines that we often overlook. All these little things slowly grow to become a tipping point leading to an individual seeing no other option as they have to provide for their family a certain set lifestyle. However, all hope is not lost and there is always a return route we as a society need not shun the people that have made mistakes but, help them, and guide them towards the road to recovery.
Areej and Ali of Batch 2024 volunteered to recite some poetry they had compiled for the occasion.
The event was formally ended with a few words by the honourable HoD, Dr. Sajida Naseem. She thanked the students for their contribution and active participation, making the event not only insightful but also very entertaining. She encouraged the students to play their part in the betterment of society as they are the future of this community.
