Awareness regarding different domains of health among Acid Attack Survivors

On Wednesday, August 25, 2021, thirty students of Shifa College of Medicine gathered in Lecture Hall 1 as part of an activity to spread awareness regarding different domains of health among Acid Attack survivors in Pakistan. The activity was conducted as part of an international organization called the International Federation of Medical Students Association (IFMSA), which is a nonprofit organization run by medical students around the world.

The activity was first introduced by Kalsom Amjad, Class of 2023. Different documentaries were played for the participants, that related the stories of the victims and how their lives were affected after the incident. Students were then divided into two groups to have a focused group discussion on the effects of acid attacks on victims, legislation for such crimes and what can be done by doctors for such patients. Time was also spent on educating the participants on the first aid for an acid attack victim. The immediate minutes following an acid attack are crucial for the victim, so it was important to ensure our future healthcare professionals are aware.

This student-led activity was supervised by Dr. Muhammad Arshad (HOD Forensic Medicine), Dr. Sajida Naseem (Associate Professor Community Medicine). In the end, Ms. Fizza Hassan from the Department of Psychology, STMU highlighted the importance of mental health in these cases.
