Department of Physiology, Shifa College of Medicine (SCM), conducted a workshop titled “Assessment of Competencies through Integrated Practical Examination (IPE)” in 17th Biennial Conference of Pakistan Physiological Society held at Al-Nafees Medical College, Islamabad. The workshop was a part of the pre-conference program held on November 23rd, 2021, in a hybrid format (online and face-to-face). The facilitators included Dr Khurram Irshad, Dr Ifra Ashraf, Dr Sadaf Majeed, Dr Hira Moin, Dr Riffat Shafi. The workshop’s purpose was to provide the participants with an experience of developing IPE by incorporating basic health science principles of multiple disciplines with clinical relevance in an integrated medical curriculum.
The workshop started with a brief introduction by Dr Khurram on the background of transition from discipline-based to the system-based integrated curriculum at SCM, including the replacement of OSPE with IPE for testing multiple competencies related to skills. This was followed by a discussion with the participants on their experience of constructing and conducting an IPE.
Dr Sadaf gave a brief overview of the prerequisites and steps involved in the construction of IPE. The participants were given an opportunity to experience pre-prepared mock IPE. Then the participants were asked to prepare their IPE stations, followed by feedback by Professor Riffat. Valuable remarks by Dr Riffat concluded the session.
