On February 4, 2025, Shifa College of Medicine observed Kashmir Solidarity Day under the Longitudinal Theme of Pakistan Studies, with the esteemed supervision of Prof. Dr. Ashraf Hussain and organization by Dr. Umme Kulsoom Khattak. The event was hosted by Fatima Ameer Year 2 and Salwa Bint e Afzal Year 3 with the aim to raise awareness about the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Indian-Occupied Kashmir and express unwavering solidarity with the Kashmiri people.
The program commenced with the recitation from the Holy Quran by Taha Jahangir. The highlight of the day was the presence of Dr. H.M. Farooq Abdullah who is a distinguished academic researcher with a PhD in Islamic Studies from the University of the Punjab, specializing in Comparative Religion. He delivered an insightful talk on the historical context, facts and figures related to the Kashmir issue. His compelling speech resonated deeply with the audience, evoking enthusiasm and emotional engagement over the pressing human rights violations in the region.
Following the lecture, a documentary was screened, showcasing graphic realities of the conflict, the suffering of Kashmiris, and the efforts made to raise the issue on international platforms. The visuals served as a powerful reminder of the injustices faced by the Kashmiri people.
Adding to the spirit of the event, Eshan Ahmad, a second-year medical student, delivered a heartfelt speech, reflecting on the strong emotional and cultural ties between Pakistan and Kashmir. His words reinforced the sense of solidarity and responsibility shared by the audience. To further uplift the spirits, a Mili Naghma was performed by Arooj Asghar from Year 3, amplifying the enthusiasm and unity in the room.
Prof. Dr. Riffat Shafi shared her valuable insights, emphasizing the importance of continued support for the Kashmiri cause and highlighted the role of medical students in advocating for humanity, justice and peace.
The event was concluded by Dr. Umme Kulsoom Khattak, who expressed her gratitude to all participants including the chief guest and reinforced to keep supporting the Kashmiri’s in their right to self-determination.
The Kashmir Solidarity Day event at Shifa College of Medicine successfully fulfilled its objective of fostering awareness, compassion, and a renewed commitment toward standing with the oppressed people of Kashmir.
