On June 28th, 2024, the Department of Health Professions Education at SCM conducted a workshop for new inductees titled “How to Conduct a Small Group Discussion and Problem-based Learning Session”. The workshop took place at the SCM campus in the basement conference room and was aimed at newly inducted faculty members as part of the institution’s continuous faculty development program. The workshop was facilitated by Dr. Muneeza Aamir, Dr. Hareem Fatima and Dr. Nilofar Nasir, who brought their extensive expertise and experience to the session. The facilitators led a highly interactive session that commenced with Dr. Aamir giving an introductory overview outlining the teaching strategies used at SCM and the type of curriculum implemented. Dr. Fatima and Dr. Nasir then led an engaging discussion, meticulously covering the fundamentals and operational aspects of conducting Small Group Discussions and Problem-Based Learning (PBL). This was followed by hands-on exercises designed to practice the creation and implementation of effective SGDs. Emphasis was placed on ensuring that the discussions are comprehensive and reflective of real-world scenarios. The session underscored the vital role that SGDs and PBLs play in aligning teaching methodologies with the educational goals, thereby enhancing the educational experience and achievement of outcomes for our students. The workshop concluded with a feedback session, allowing participants to share their insights and suggestions regarding the workshop along with any difficulties faced in their teaching. This feedback is used as a crucial measure for the continuous improvement of faculty development programs at SCM by DHPE to ensure improved and effective delivery of undergraduate medical curriculum.
