Our program is providing undergraduate training program in this field for students pursuing their career in Paramedical. Bachelors of Science in Medical Technology (ASMT) is a 2.5 Year / 5 Semester Program which is offered by SCMT / STMU in 10 clinical domains. The number of available training slots is very limited in each domain and there is no tuition fee included for this program.

Cell, Tissues and Membranes and Homeostasis

Students will be introduced to the basics of core subjects and taught a brief outline of cellular mechanisms along with an introduction to pathology and pharmacology.

 

The Skeletal and integumentary System

Students will be taught Anatomical description and physiologic function of important bones and skeletal muscles incorporated with Pathological diseases affecting the system.

 

The Cardiovascular System

Students will learn anatomical and physiological significance of heart and major blood vessels. Knowledge about the Pathological diseases affecting the CVS system and treatment options would also be imparted.

 

The Digestive System

Anatomical and physiological functions of the GI system would be outlined along with pathophysiology of Stomach, Intestines, liver and pancreas. Drugs associated with digestive systems and infective organisms would also be incorporated in the curriculum.

 

Respiratory System

Students will learn anatomy and principal mechanism of the respiratory system. This structure of study would also highlight pathological diseases, associated microbes and treatment options.

 

Urinary System

Students will be taught basic anatomy, physiology and pathology regarding kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder. This scheme would also include integration with major pharmacological agents associated with urinary system.

 

English I

Students will be learning English language over the span of first three semesters. Course outline is designed to focus on basics of grammar, sentence structuring, tackling comprehensions, speaking and presentation skills.

 

Computers

Students will be learning basics of computer operation, sound knowledge of word processing, slide show preparation and swift operation of search engines.

 

Pak studies and Islamiyat I

Students will learn about the ideology of Pakistan and steps leading to the Pakistan movement.

In Islamiyat they will learn Arabic and translated versions of Surah and Ahadees.

Nervous System

They will learn about the anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology of different sections of brain, spinal cord, cerebrum, brain stem, cerebellum and their functional plus anatomical integration with other systems

 

Endocrine System

Students will study anatomical positions of major endocrine glands including pituitary thyroid and adrenals, correlating it with physiology, pathology and pharmacology.

 

ECG basics

Students will be introduced to basic principles of ECG including rate, rhythm and taught ECG interpretation highlighting arrhythmias, infarction and axis deviation.

 

Pak studies and Islamiyat II

Students will learn about the constitution of Pakistan and understand its geographical importance relating it to foreign relations.

They will also learn about the life of Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H) and concepts of Islamic civilization.

 

English II

Students in second semester will focus on essay writing, narration and Urdu to English translation. They would also work to further polish their speaking skills.

 

3rd

Third semester

Microbiology

This course would focus on teaching general aspects of microbiology highlighting major disease-causing bacteria and viruses. Students will also learn basics of anti-viral therapy and parasitology.

 

Biomedical electronics

Students will be given basic and thorough knowledge of fundamentals of electricity, magnetism, laws of resistance and a brief introduction to working of circuits.

They will learn about the basic trouble shooting and their rectification, calibration and first order servicing/ maintenance

 

Physics

Students will learn basic physics focused on concepts of scalar and vector quantities, torque, equilibrium. Brief outline of notions of sound and optics along with electromagnetic spectrum focusing on ultrasound waves, would also be taught.

 

English III

Students will learn to listen to documentaries and will be guided towards developing sound knowledge of academic writing. Further emphasis would be given to improving their fluency in the English language.

 

Nursing

Students will be introduced to basics of nursing, and taught concepts of health and illness.

 

Central sterile supply department

Students will be introduced to a course regarding central sterile supply department which includes general practices of infection control with strong emphasis on disinfection and sterilization techniques

 

Life support training

Students will be introduced to a concise course regarding basic life support training along with associated workshop.

 

Rapid Response and Practical Drills

They will also learn rapid response initiation and protocol. This training would also include practical drills regarding resuscitation and skilled emergency practical procedures, in order to better equip students for hazardous situations.

 

4th

Fourth semester

along with clinicals, highlights the following basic subjects:

Community Medicine

Students will be familiarized with basics of community medicine. They will learn concepts of preventive medicine, public health and epidemiology along with notions of disaster management.

 

Nutrition

Students will be introduced to basics of nutrition and taught various terminologies, disorders and therapeutics involved in the field. Focus would be put on nutritional deficiencies and how they reflect upon way of life.

 

Principles of JCIA and Disaster Management

A complete comprehensive course suggested by JCIA regarding patient centered standards and health care organization is also taught. This course is incorporated with basics of disaster management and equips the students in dealing with emergency medical situations.

Students will also learn to identify critically ill patients and be able to provide effective and safe immediate care.

 

5th

Fifth semester

deals with advanced clinical skills and the basic subject of Biostatistics

Biostatistics

A comprehensive course of bio-statistics is taught in the final semester which would enable the students to analyse data while identifying variables and basic knowledge of SPSS. They will also learn probability sampling and concept of measuring central tendencies during the course of study.

Clinical orientation

Students will be introduced to basics of cardiology. They will learn anatomy, physiology, microbiology, pathology and basic pharmacology of heart, and associated thoracic structures. Students will also be introduced to echocardiography and interpretation.

3rd

Third semester constitutes clinical based learning

In this semester students will focus on pharmacology of diuretics and cardiac glycosides along with comprehensive study of congenital heart diseases. Students will enhance their knowledge regarding ECG performance and skillful interpretation. They will learn to recognize normal and abnormal rhythms along with associated pathology.

4th

Fourth semester

puts focus on advanced learning and clinical skills

This semester would focus on advanced skills regarding ETT and reaching an appropriate clinical diagnosis. Students will also learn ECHO/DOPPLER, performance and disease process associated with it.

5th

Fifth semester

further highlights the clinical applications and practicalities of the specialty

Final semester would focus on further polishing their clinical skills. Students will learn in depth, the art of performing ECHO. They will also learn major cardiovascular/valvular diseases and their interpretation on ECHO. Students will also learn concepts of stress echo, transesophageal echo, pediatric echocardiography and clinical applications of Holter.

Second semester continues with specialty specific clinical introduction

Clinical orientation

Students will be introduced to basics of cardiac catheterization. They will learn physics of echo with reference to characteristics of sound and be able to establish a concept of transducer, imaging principles and Doppler techniques.

3rd

Third semester constitutes clinical based learning

They will learn general principles of cardiac catheterization and would be introduced to the angiography room. Students would also be educated on specific complications including arrhythmias, vascular complications and renal dysfunction.

4th

Fourth semester

puts focus on advanced learning and clinical skills

In fourth semester they will learn basic techniques and approach used for cardiac catheterization which would include comprehensive learning of catheterization via femoral artery and alternative sites for left heart catheterization. Brief outline of troubleshooting would also be taught.

5th

Fifth semester

further highlights the clinical applications and practicalities of the specialty

In final semester students will further polish their clinical skills. They will learn the catheterization protocol in children and infants. Students will be introduced to hemodynamic principles, angiographic techniques and will learn to evaluate cardiac function.

Clinical orientation

Students are introduced to the basics of dialysis. They will review renal anatomy, physiology and pathology and will be able to make clinical correlation. They will be familiarized with principles of dialysis and the technical aspects of dialytic procedure.

3rd

Third semester constitutes clinical based learning

In third semester students will focus on indications of dialysis including discussion on topics such as renal failure and physiologic principles of urea kinetic modelling. They would be briefed on; apparatus used for dialysis, procedure performance, assessment of AVF, grafts and the associated complications.

4th

Fourth semester

puts focus on advanced learning and clinical skills

Fourth semester would highlight advanced skills regarding the equipment, which would include anticoagulation techniques, and principles of slow continuous therapy. Students will also learn the rationale of plasmapheresis and associated treatment strategies. In this semester students will also study basics of peritoneal dialysis, use of equipment and associated complications.

5th

Fifth semester

further highlights the clinical applications and practicalities of the specialty

Fifth semester would enable students to polish their skills and learn more about psychological problems and rehabilitation in patients undergoing dialysis. They will study endocrine, haematological and metabolic disorders. Furthermore, students will be taught to integrate different organ systems with their clinical knowledge in order to better understand the associated complications.

Clinical orientation

Students will be given basic understanding of operating rooms, procedures different diagnostics procedures and in depth understanding of CSSD. Focus would be on minor O.T procedures and infection control practices. They will also learn patient handling and detailed instructions on usage of equipment.

3rd

Third semester constitutes clinical based learning

In this semester students will scrub & circulate in different surgical procedures in ENT, Eye, Urology, General Surgery and Neurosurgery, where they will learn pre/post op surgical care and surgical interventions of respective specialties.

4th

Fourth semester

puts focus on advanced learning and clinical skills

This semester would focus on advanced skills and students will scrub & circulate in different surgical procedures in Plastic Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Cardiac Surgery. They will learn pre and post op management of the respective specialties along with knowledge of major surgical procedures performed.

5th

Fifth semester

further highlights the clinical applications and practicalities of the specialty

Final semester would focus on further polishing their clinical skills. Students will scrub and circulate in vascular surgery and Renal transplant surgery. They will also learn the steps involved in transplant including donor nephrectomy and transplant to recipient and be able to master the use of all surgical equipment.

In this semester students will have a comprehensive exposure of clinical oncology, radiotherapy simulation and treatment techniques. The will also be introduced to general patient supervision after radiotherapy.

4th

Fourth semester

puts focus on advanced learning and clinical skills

This semester would focus on learning operation of radiotherapy equipment including linear accelerators. Students will learn basic radiation physics, imaging techniques and site-specific treatment procedures.

5th

Fifth semester

further highlights the clinical applications and practicalities of the specialty

Final semester would focus on learning protective methods in radiotherapy along with radio-biology, quality assurance and advanced radiotherapy techniques.

Clinical orientation

Students will be learning basic brain anatomy, basics of EEG and its electrical concepts, OHM’s law, capacitor, resistor montages, trouble shooting instrumentation, polarity conventions calibration of machine, normal adult EEG and their variants.

3rd

Third semester constitutes clinical based learning

Students will learn advanced techniques and abnormal adult EEG, normal and abnormal paediatric EEG, all types of seizures. They will also learn the basics of nerve conduction studies, patient selection and procedural workups in nerve conduction.

4th

Fourth semester

puts focus on advanced learning and clinical skills

This semester would emphasize more on all kinds of electro-diagnostic workups by nerve conduction studies including neuropathies, myopathies, radiculopathies. They will be taught about the basics of evoke potential, auditory evoke potential and visual evoke potentials.

5th

Fifth semester further highlights the clinical applications and practicalities of the specialty

In the final semester students will learn about complicated cases in evoke potentials, auditory evoke potential, visual evoke potential and somatosensory evoke potential. They will learn about repetitive nerve studies, blink reflex, autonomic testing and sleep studies.

Clinical orientation

Students will be introduced to foundations of respiratory care, methods of enhanced quality therapy along with principles of infection control.

3rd

Third semester constitutes clinical based learning

This semester would focus on a review of respiratory anatomy, physiology and a comprehensive scheme of assessment of respiratory disorders which would also include bedside assessment of patients and introduction to basic procedures done by respiratory therapist.

4th

Fourth semester

puts focus on advanced learning and clinical skills

Students will learn outlines of history taking, physical examination and analysis of Lab results enabling them to correctly interpret and diagnose respiratory disorders. Alongside they will learn cardio-pulmonary diseases (neonatal & adult) their systemic manifestations and handling of equipment used by respiratory therapists. Moreover, they will learn Non-invasive ventilation, its physiology and clinical applications.

5th

Fifth semester

further highlights the clinical applications and practicalities of the specialty

Final semester would focus on hands on experience in learning basic therapeutics including airway management, aerosol therapy and emergency life support. Students will also learn assessment of respiratory failure and prompt need for ventilatory support. They will be introduced to invasive ventilation and be given hands on experience of advanced procedures.

Students will be introduced to basics of urology. They will learn about local anesthesia, urinary catheters, catheter placement, process of bladder irrigation and cystoscopy. Students will also be introduced to a variety of urological endo-instruments.

3rd

Third semester constitutes clinical based learning

In this semester students will focus on pathological diseases and interventions. They will learn about testicular torsion and lower urinary tract symptoms. Students will also be focusing on procedures including, meatotomy and hydrocele repair.

4th

Fourth semester

puts focus on advanced learning and clinical skills

This semester would focus on advanced skills and procedures including orchidectomy, Uro-dynamics, DJ stenting, TRUS biopsy. Students will also learn differentials of hematuria and necessary interventions.

5th

Fifth semester

further highlights the clinical applications and practicalities of the specialty

Final semester would put focus on advanced renal diseases. Students will learn about Ca prostate, Acute and chronic renal failure, dialysis and renal transplant. Learning and understanding disease pathology and intervention would be the main highlight of this semester.

Eligibility Criteria

Eligibility Criteria is of 50% marks in FSC (Pre Medical) and Application form and process is same as BS-MT Program. There is no tuition fee for this program however there is a bond period of 3 years after completing the ASMT program.
