ENT diseases form a major component of patients visiting the clinics. It facilitates patients from pediatric to geriatric age groups. Its domain includes the regions of ear, nose and throat and head and neck cancers. The foundation of the ENT department at Shifa College of Medicine was laid down in the year 2001. Since then, thousands of students have been graduated who are working at home and abroad. Currently, the department has 2 professors, 2 assistant professors, 2 senior registrars and 1 registrar. This teaching unit of the Shifa Tameer-e-Millat University at Shifa Foundation Community health Centre is providing services to the community both indoors and in outpatient department. The department besides carrying out routine ENT procedures is also doing complex head and neck surgeries including functional endoscopic sinus and skull base surgeries and assists other departments like neurosurgery, ophthalmology, general surgery where they require collaboration. Endoscopic ear surgery and cochlear Implant surgery have also added a feather in the cap of the department for providing unmatched patient care services to community at large. The department has grown over time to have a fully equipped operating rooms, outpatient clinic, audiology assessment room, minor procedure room and classrooms. ENT department is also facilitated by the speech and swallowing therapy and vertigo clinic.
The department is equipped with rigid and flexible nasolaryngoscopy and a microscope in the OPD which has not only made diagnosis of various diseases easy but also this diagnostic modality has helped our medical teaching for under and postgraduate students. In 2005, traditional curriculum was replaced by integrated curriculum model and clerkship was introduced for 4th year students. In 2016, ENT as a subject was introduced in the 3rd year MBBS course also. Currently, the ENT offers postgraduate training programs to cater FCPS trainees in collaboration with Shifa International Hospital. The department hosts elective students from national and international medical schools through student affairs department of the college. This allows students to explore the subject, discover their passions and potentially discover new career paths.
In addition to providing clinical care, the faculty has collaborated with numerous clinical and basic health sciences departments actively and produced research articles in the field of ENT and medical education. Our department has 25 published articles till date and 4 prospective studies in progress. The department has been a part of community work in the form of various medical camps organized by Shifa Foundation and many students’ societies where they have contributed to the cause. In addition our faculty members have regularly been approached by mainstream visual media to appear in different talk shows related to health awareness.2
