Diploma on Bio-ethics and Professionalism

The field of medicine is constantly evolving, presenting complex ethical challenges alongside remarkable advancements. Bioethics provides a framework to navigate these complexities, ensuring ethical conduct in research, education, and clinical practice. The diploma program in Bioethics and Professionalism is designed to equip professionals with the knowledge and skills to navigate bioethical dilemmas within the rich Islamic ethical tradition. Through this program, the professionals/learners shall be able to explore core bioethical principles like autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, and justice. They will gain a deeper understanding of how these principles are applied in various healthcare scenarios, including: Clinical ethics and patient care, Research ethics and responsible research conduct, public health ethics and ensuring equitable access to healthcare. Islamic bioethics offers a unique perspective that complements these core principles. The learners shall delve into how Islamic spirituality and social norms inform bioethical decision-making on critical issues like (i) the beginning and end of human life, (ii) Permissibility of abortion, (iii) ethical considerations of assisted reproductive technologies (ART), (iv) palliative care and end-of-life decisions, (v) tissue transplantation and gender-related medical issues, and (vi) ethical responses to pandemics etc. This program aims to foster critical thinking and open dialogue, encouraging learners to engage with diverse ethical perspectives. By examining the intersections between Islamic bioethics and contemporary ethical values, they ought to develop a nuanced understanding of healthcare ethics. Upon graduation, they are expected to be prepared to make informed and ethical decisions in their respective healthcare professions.

Learning Outcomes

After working through this course, the learners shall be able to:

• Grasp core bioethical principles: This replaces “understand the basic terminologies” and focuses on the fundamental concepts of bioethics like autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, and justice.

 • Analyze the application of ethics in healthcare: This combines “define the role of ethics in medicine and other health care disciplines” and “recognize ethical issues when they arise in health care practice.” It emphasizes the ongoing process of applying ethical principles to real-world situations.

• Navigate bioethical dilemmas with a structured approach: This rephrases “deal with biomedical ethical issues in an orderly manner.” It focuses on developing a framework for reasoning through ethical problems in healthcare.

• Apply relevant professional codes of conduct while addressing bioethical dilemmas.
