Shifa College of Medicine

Department of Ophthalmology

The Department of Ophthalmology at Shifa College of Medicine stands at the forefront of integrated undergraduate medical education, patient care, and clinical innovation. Since the inception of the college, the department has been a key contributor to the Shifa vision, growing under the exemplary leadership of renowned professionals including Prof. Dr. Aslam Malik, Prof. Dr Gen. (R) Kamal Akhtar, Prof. Dr Saadia Farooq and currently Prof. Dr. Sulman Jaffar.
Committed to excellence, our department blends a patient-centered approach with dynamic, modern teaching methodologies. Ophthalmology is introduced in the 2nd year during the Special Senses (SPS) module, and further explored in 3rd and 4th year through structured clinical rotations, clerkships, and case-based learning. Students gain practical experience through outpatient clinics, operating theatres, evening clinics, and diagnostic procedures, ensuring readiness for real-world scenarios. Under supervision of Dr Sulman and Dr Ayisha Kausar, the department remained resilient during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensuring continuity of clinical services and academic activities through virtual platforms and innovative teaching approaches.
We offer a wide range of specialized ophthalmic services including treatment for glaucoma, macular degeneration, cataracts, corneal diseases, retinal conditions, and neuro-ophthalmic disorders. Advanced diagnostic tools such as Optical Coherence Tomography, Fundus Fluorescein Angiography, Corneal Topography, and B-scan ultrasonography are routinely utilized. With the help of Shifa International Hospital The department also performs high-volume surgical procedures including Phacoemulsifications, Trabeculectomies, Dacryocystectomies, and keratoplasties.
With a strong focus on service, the department has successfully collaborated with Shifa Foundation to conduct free cataract surgery programs benefiting thousands. Our faculty includes members with prestigious fellowships from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow and CPSP Pakistan.
The Ophthalmology Department remains dedicated to shaping future eye care leaders through a fellowship training initiative in collaboration with Shifa International Hospital—marking the beginning of a promising new chapter in academic and clinical excellence.
