Shifa College of Medicine was vibrant and enthusiastic on the 80th Independence Day.
On August 18, 2026, “Azm e Watan”, an event to celebrate the spirit of Independence was organized by the Longitudinal Theme of Pakistan Studies and the Shifa Debating Society, under the organizational leadership of Dr. Umme Kulsoom Khattak and the guidance of Prof. Dr. Ashraf Hussain. The event was conceived as a meaningful celebration of Pakistan’s Independence Day, providing students with an engaging platform to reflect upon national identity, unity, patriotism, and their responsibilities as citizens.
MBBS students from Year 1 and 2 actively participated in the event with great enthusiasm and commitment. The program commenced with the recitation of the Holy Quran. This was followed by two declamations, one in English and one in Urdu, delivered by the students. The speeches focused on the significance of Pakistan, the historical struggle behind its creation, and the importance of nationalism and patriotism. The participants eloquently emphasized that love for the country extends beyond emotional attachment and is reflected through responsible citizenship, social cohesion, integrity, and commitment to the progress and prosperity of Pakistan.
An entertaining and intellectually stimulating quiz competition was subsequently organized among the students. Four teams, comprising three participants each, competed enthusiastically on questions covering Pakistan’s history, national achievements, important personalities, landmarks, and contemporary affairs. The competition generated considerable excitement and demonstrated the students’ knowledge and interest in national history and current affairs. Year 1 students—Muhammad bin Muttahhar, Zalan Babar Ahmad, and Jiyad Ahmad emerged victorious, securing the winning position through their impressive performance.
The program continued with the screening of an informative and engaging ISPR documentary on the history and making of Pakistan. Through historical narratives and visual representation, the documentary revisited the significant events, struggles, sacrifices, and leadership that contributed to the creation of the country. The presentation evoked a strong sense of emotion and reflection among the audience, reinforcing appreciation for the sacrifices made by previous generations and encouraging students to value their national heritage and responsibilities.
A heartfelt poem on Pakistan was recited by Dr. Umme Kulsoom Khattak, followed by the Vote of Thanks. The event concluded with closing remarks by Prof. Dr. Ashraf Hussain, who emphasized the enduring principles of Unity, Faith, and Discipline as fundamental pillars for national development and individual responsibility. He encouraged students to embody these principles in their academic, professional, and personal lives and to contribute positively towards the advancement of Pakistan. The event concluded successfully, leaving the participants with a renewed sense of national pride, unity, and commitment to the values associated with the spirit of independence.
