The class of 2026 visited the “Rehabilitation Centre for Children with Developmental Disorders” located in sector H-8/4, Islamabad, on 16 and 17 May 2023. This government-run organization is dedicated to providing free education for children with special needs. The Department of Community Medicine arranged the visit as part of the Neurosciences module.

The visit started with a comprehensive overview of the organization’s objectives, facilities, and activities by the head of the Institution. The students were given a tour of the institute, including the autism unit, early developmental unit, soundproof and soft rooms, and gymnasium. In addition to these, students were also shown the occupational therapy room, speech therapy area, library, and computer lab. These additional spaces are integral to supporting the diverse developmental needs of special children.

As the students explored the centre, the faculty members took the time to explain the operations and functions of each area. They answered the students’ questions and highlighted the importance of these specialized facilities in the children’s overall development and well-being.

An essential aspect of the visit was the opportunity for the medical students to interact with the special children. These interactions allowed the students to witness the challenges these children face daily and develop empathy. The students acknowledged that engaging with the children meaningfully would help cultivate a sense of inclusivity within themselves, which would ultimately benefit them in their future medical careers.

The visit to the Rehabilitation Centre for Children with Developmental Disorders offered the medical students a unique and valuable experience. The students gained insights into the importance of providing comprehensive care and support for individuals with developmental disorders.
