The Department of Community Medicine, SCM organized a field visit to the National Institute of Health (NIH) for the students of the Class of 2025 on 17 and 18 April 2023.
The objective of the visit was to familiarize students with the work of the NIH, a federal agency that conducts and supports medical research. The institute is multi-disciplinary and is involved in Public Health related activities.
The visit was facilitated by NIH staff which briefed the students about public health activities that NIH is involved in, such as diagnostic facilities, research, surveillance and production of various vaccines.
The brief was followed by a tour of the Emergency Operations Center, where the facilitator explained in detail about the field investigation of infectious diseases, including the aetiology and epidemiology, as well as disease surveillance and response system. The students also visited the Public Health Laboratories at NIH, including histopathology, cytology, and haematology labs.
