As part of Community Medicine Rotation, the students of Year 3 class 2027 visited the Armed Forces Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine (AFIRM) in Rawalpindi on August 28, 2025. This visit was supervised by Dr. Umme Kulsoom Khattak and facilitated by Ms. Sana Mangrio.
AFIRM is a national leader in physical medicine and rehabilitation, providing advanced and compassionate care to individuals recovering from injury, trauma or chronic illness. During the visit, a resident trainee at the institute guided the students through AFIRM’s multidisciplinary approach to rehabilitation, highlighting the role of physiatry in supporting long-term recovery. Students had the opportunity to observe custom-made prosthetics, vocational training programs for amputees, therapies for children with cerebral palsy, biomechanics and gait labs, a hydrotherapy pool, halogen/salt therapy rooms and the rehabilitation gym. The students left AFIRM with more than just clinical insights- they left with a deeper respect for the complexity of recovery, the science that supports it and the dedicated professionals who champion every step forward.
