As part of the Pinktober initiative, the Department of Community Medicine & Public Health (CM&PH) organized a Breast Cancer Awareness Seminar for third-year medical students on October 30, 2025. The event was led by Dr. Saima Rafi, Assistant Professor CM&PH, in collaboration with the Shifa Foundation, aiming to promote awareness, early detection and preventive education among future healthcare professionals.
The seminar began with the recitation of the Holy Quran, followed by an insightful talk by Dr. Humera Naz Altaf, a renowned General Surgeon at Shifa International Hospital. Drawing on her extensive clinical expertise in diagnosing and managing breast cancer across diverse patient populations, she delivered an engaging and informative session. The talk emphasized on the breast cancer prevalence, its major risk factors and the critical importance of early detection for improving patient outcomes. She also debunked common myths and misconceptions surrounding breast cancer, providing evidence-based insights to enhance students’ understanding.
The seminar proved highly educational for the medical students, who participated actively throughout the session. It concluded with a brief presentation by Ms. Fozia Shahzad, Lead for Center of Philanthropy & Community Services (COPCS), who shared an overview of the Shifa Foundation’s initiatives and accomplishments in advancing quality healthcare delivery in rural communities across Pakistan. The distinguished speakers were then presented with the certificates of appreciation in recognition of their valuable contributions to the seminar.
